Description

Image of Archangel Michael on Naturally Aged Wood

A beautiful serigraph of Archangel Michael, the leader of the heavenly hosts, depicted in full on a cloud.

Archangel Michael is shown as the Archistrategos, playing a pivotal role in both the Old and New Testaments.

He was the one who saved the angelic hosts from their fall with the words “Let us stand well, let us stand in awe”. For his boldness, the Triune God appointed him as the “Lord of the Angelic Hosts,” Archistrategos and Taxiarch. Along with all the angels, he proclaimed the Trisagion Hymn: “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of His glory.” It is also believed that, by God’s command, Archangel Michael drove Adam and Eve out of Paradise.

He was the one who announced to Abraham the need to sacrifice his son Isaac, only to later prevent the sacrifice. He appeared to Lot, rescuing him and his family from the destruction of Sodom, and to Jacob, saving him from his brother Esau, who sought to kill him. Archangel Michael was also the one who led the people of Israel out of Egypt, appearing as a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, guiding them to the Promised Land.

In the New Testament, he is the one who will announce the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. He is prophetically depicted leading an army of angels in battle in heaven against “the great Dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the Devil,” and his demons.

He has become the patron saint of the Air Force. Typically, he is depicted holding a spear, though in several representations, he also holds a scepter, a symbol of the authority granted to him by God.

He shares his feast day with Archangel Gabriel on November 8th.

The naturally aged wood from a renovated Mount Athos cell on which this image is painted gives it a unique aesthetic and collectible value, while also carrying a piece of the centuries-old history of the Athonite community.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
