Description

Image of Archangel Michael on Naturally Aged Wood

A magnificent serigraph of Archangel Michael, the Archistrategos of the heavenly hosts.

Archangel Michael appears as the Supreme Commander and plays a pivotal role in both the Old and New Testaments. He was the one who saved the angelic forces from falling with the proclamation: “Let us attend! Let us stand well, let us stand with fear.” For his boldness, the Triune God gave him the position of “Lord of the Angelic Hosts,” Archistrategos and Chief Commander. He proclaimed along with all the angels the Trisagion Hymn: “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of Sabaoth, heaven and earth are full of His glory.” It is also believed that, by God’s command, Archangel Michael drove the Protoplasts (Adam and Eve) out of Paradise.

He was the one who announced to Abraham the need to sacrifice his son Isaac, and then stopped him from doing so. He appeared to Lot and saved him and his family from the destruction of Sodom, and also to Jacob when he saved him from his brother Esau, who intended to kill him. Furthermore, Archangel Michael was the one who led the people of Israel out of Egypt, appearing as a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, guiding them to the Promised Land.

In the New Testament, Archangel Michael will announce the second coming of Jesus Christ. He is prophetically depicted leading an army of angels in a heavenly battle against “the great Dragon, the ancient serpent, the Devil, and his demons.”

He is honored as the patron of the Air Force. While he is often depicted holding a spear, in many representations, he is also shown holding a scepter, symbolizing the authority granted to him by God.

Archangel Michael is celebrated together with Archangel Gabriel on November 8.

The naturally aged wood, from a renovated Athonite cell, on which the image is painted, gives the icon a unique aesthetic and collectible value, while also carrying with it a piece of Mount Athos’ long-standing history.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
