Description
Excavated Lithograph with the Madonna and Christ
Excavated Lithograph: Characteristics
The work is entirely hand-crafted, without the use of machines, on excavated natural wood. It is a creation by the iconographer Athanasios, a student of the Athoniada Ecclesiastical Academy, who remains faithful to the Byzantine art style as taught at Mount Athos. His works are covered with pure beeswax to remain unchanged over time.
In this particular image, the monk iconographer used the lithography technique to create a uniquely beautiful work. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk crafted this work by following the traditional method of artificial aging, as he was taught in the iconography workshops of the Athonite State. In fact, the artificial aging of the iconography is handmade, a process to which the monks of Mount Athos give particular importance.
As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done entirely by hand, there may be small variations in the dimensions of each icon.
The icon is available upon order.
