Description

Excavated Lithograph with Panagia Portaitissa

The authentic Hagiography of Panagia Portaitissa is located in the Holy Monastery of Iberon and, according to tradition, is the work of the evangelist Luke. It acquired the nickname “Portaitissa” because of its position as it is placed in the chapel of the Holy Monastery of Ibera, to the left of the central Gate.

In this color lithograph of Panagia Portaitissa, which is an exact copy of the original, the charismatic Hagioreite iconographer has applied artificial aging with a gold finish. Around the halo he applied gold paint with small embossed details. At the four corners, the image is crafted with a gold finish, between the digs of artificial aging.

The stern expression of the Virgin Mary’s face, accentuated by her captivating gaze, inspires awe.
The Hagiography of Panagia Portaitissa is crafted with the best possible quality to the original. It is hand-finished and coated with pure beeswax according to the criteria of the Macedonian School of Mount Athos.

The icon of the Virgin Mary, Mother of all Christians everywhere, is a blessing for every home. With any rendering of her face, hagiographers take care to encapsulate the qualities, attributes and history of each image. The people have given the Virgin Mary countless names, or “Theotoconymia”, as they are otherwise known. So far it is estimated that there are more than 500. Some taken from hymns, others from the place where a certain Temple or Monastery is located and others from the way in which they have been painted.

In this particular image, the hagiographer monk used the lithography technique, creating a work of unique beauty. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk crafted this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of the State of Athens.
In fact, the artificial aging of the iconography is done by hand, a process to which the monks of Mount Athos give special importance.
