Description

Excavated Lithograph with the Last Supper

On Thursday, before being led to the cross, Jesus gives the Last Supper to his disciples in Jerusalem and Judas betrays him. Before the supper begins, Jesus himself washes the feet of all His disciples wanting in this way to teach everyone humility. Then He sat down at the table, and taking the bread in His hands He said to them “Take, Eat.” He did the same with the cup of wine saying, “Pinch from it, all of you, for this is my blood. Do this to remember me.” In this way he delivered to people the mystery of the Holy Eucharist.

The meaning of the Last Supper is the two sides of love, joy and sorrow, light and darkness. Christ’s love for his disciples and man brings redemption from passions. However, at the same time Judas’ love for the thirty pieces of silver is destructive and leads him from light to darkness. On Maundy Thursday, the Church commemorates the Last Supper, the tradition, that is, from the Lord himself of the mystery of the Holy Eucharist to people.

Excavated Lithography: Features

The work is crafted entirely by hand, without machines, in hollowed out natural wood. It is the work of the iconographer Athanasios, a student of the Athonias Ecclesiastical Academy, who remains faithful to Byzantine art as he was taught on Mount Athos. His works are covered with pure beeswax so that they remain unchanged over time.

In this particular image, the hagiographer monk used the lithography technique, creating a work of unique beauty. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk crafted this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of the State of Athens. In fact, the artificial aging of the iconography is done by hand, a process to which the monks of Mount Athos give special importance.
