Description

Excavated Lithography with the Saints Taxiarches

Angels are often mentioned in the Bible. Angels are creations of God, immaterial and incorporeal, free from the passions of men. In the Orthodox tradition, the image of angels with wings has been formed.

They are depicted with dignity, in the form of a heavenly army. They are divided and classified into orders with separate names: Angels, Archangels, Principalities, Powers, Powers, Thrones, Dominions, Cherubim and Seraphim. Archangels Michael and Gabriel are at the head of the angelic forces. The name Michael is interpreted as “power of God” and Gabriel as “man of God”.

The meeting of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel is celebrated on November 8

On this day, the Church celebrates the gathering of the generals Michael and Gabriel and all the heavenly forces in memory of Satan’s apostasy. When the archangel Michael saw Satan fall, he called upon the heavenly powers. He then exclaimed “proschomen” and praised God with the rest of the angels. This assembly was called the assembly of the incorporeal forces, that is, the union and unity of the good angels.

Excavated Lithography: Characteristics

The work is crafted entirely by hand, without machines, in hollowed out natural wood. It is the work of the iconographer Athanasios, a student of the Athonias Ecclesiastical Academy, who remains faithful to Byzantine art as he was taught on Mount Athos. His works are covered with pure beeswax so that they remain unchanged over time.

In this particular image, the hagiographer monk used the lithography technique, creating a work of unique beauty. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk crafted this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of the State of Athens. In fact, the artificial aging of the iconography is done by hand, a process to which the monks of Mount Athos give special importance.
