Description

Lithograph with Saint Nicholas

Agios Nikolaos was born in the 3rd century AD in Patara in Lycia to pious parents. It took place during the era of the emperors Diocletian (284-304 AD), Maximian (286-305 AD) and Constantine the Great.

He was orphaned at a young age, inheriting a large fortune from his parents. Nikolaos, inspired by philanthropic feelings, disposed of his wealth to relieve those in need.

Then he devoted himself to the ascetic life. However, due to his special virtue, he was honored, without seeking it, first with the office of priest in Patara and then with the office of archbishop of Myron. From this position, he lovingly guided his flock and confessed the truth of the Gospel boldly. This led to his arrest and imprisonment by the local rulers.

When Constantine the Great became emperor, all the Christians who were imprisoned were freed. Thus, Nikolaos returned to the archbishopric throne of Myra. In fact, he took part in the First Ecumenical Council where he stood out for his wisdom and ethics.

Saint Nicholas was gifted, while he was still alive, with the gift of miracles. His miracles to this day are innumerable. He fell asleep in 330 AD. The Church commemorates him on December 6 and he is the patron saint of sailors.
