Description

Excavated Lithograph with Saint Demetrius
An amazing image with Saint Demetrius, the patron saint and patron saint of Thessaloniki. In the person of Saint Demetrius, Thessaloniki sees its protector and liberator. Not only because the liberation of the city from the Turks in 1912 coincided with the feast of the Saint but also because, as tradition says, before the liberation of Thessaloniki, its inhabitants saw the Saint on horseback in the White Tower cheering them on. According to the Christian tradition, Saint Demetrius lived and was martyred in Thessaloniki during the reign of Diocletian, while he was the son of an aristocratic family and an officer, however this status did not prevent him from accepting the Orthodox faith and being baptized a Christian.
Excavated Lithography: Characteristics
The work is crafted entirely by hand, without machinery, in hollowed-out natural wood. It is the work of the iconographer Athanasios, a student of the Athonias Ecclesiastical Academy, who remains faithful to Byzantine art as he was taught on Mount Athos. His works are covered with pure beeswax so that they remain unchanged over time.
In this particular image, the hagiographer monk used the lithography technique, creating a unique work. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk crafted this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of the State of Athens. In fact, the artificial aging of the iconography is a process to which the monks of Mount Athos give special importance.
