Engraved Lithograph with Saint Demetrius

An impressive icon featuring Saint Demetrius, the patron saint and protector of Thessalonica. In the figure of Saint Demetrius, Thessalonica sees its protector and liberator. Not only because the liberation of the city from the Turks in 1912 coincided with the feast of the Saint, but also because, according to tradition, before the liberation, the city’s inhabitants saw the Saint on horseback at the White Tower, encouraging them. According to Christian tradition, Saint Demetrius lived and was martyred in Thessalonica during the reign of Diocletian. He was born into an aristocratic family and was an officer, but this did not prevent him from accepting the Orthodox faith and being baptized a Christian.

Engraved Lithograph: Features

The artwork is entirely handmade, without machines, on engraved natural wood. It is the work of the iconographer Athanasios, a student of the Athoniad Ecclesiastical Academy, who remains faithful to Byzantine art as he learned it at Mount Athos. His works are covered with pure beeswax to remain unchanged over time.

In this particular icon, the monk iconographer used the lithography technique to create a work of exceptional beauty. Specifically, by using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk crafted this piece following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of the Athonite State. Moreover, the artificial aging of the icon is handmade, a process to which the monks of Mount Athos attach particular importance.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is entirely done by hand, there may be slight variations in the dimensions of each icon.
