The Greek worry beads resemble prayer ropes and are likely to have evolved from the komboskini. They are used for relaxation, craftsmanship, as an anti-stress tool, and even as a means of reducing smoking. They are often called “easy beads” (εύχαντρο). The religious person, holding the komboskini, touches each knot while saying a prayer. The term “knot” gave rise to the word “kombologi” (worry beads).

Worry Beads – History

The worry beads, officially known as kombologion, consist of beads made from amber, silver, glass, wood, etc., pierced at the center and strung on a thread whose ends are tied in a knot. The beads are slowly moved one after the other with the help of the fingers, or the entire string is rotated around the fingers as a male occupation.

It is first documented in Greece in a rare photograph from around 1840 in Karystos, showing a local nobleman in traditional attire welcoming King Otto while holding a set of worry beads.
