Komboloi – History

The rosary, officially a knob(n), consists of beads made of amber, silver, glass, wood, etc., pierced in the centre and threaded into thread the ends of which are joined by a knot, and which are slowly shifted one after the other by means of the fingers, or rotated all around the fingers as a male occupation.

It is attested in Greece for the first time in an image in a rare photograph dated around 1840 in Karystos and depicts a local lord in traditional costume welcoming Otto, holding a rosary in his hands.
