The Greek worry beads resemble prayer ropes and likely evolved from the komboskini. They are used for relaxation, focus, as an anxiety reliever, and even as a means of reducing smoking. It is often referred to as “efchandro.” The religious person, holding the prayer beads, touches each knot and recites a prayer. This is where the term “kombologi” (worry beads) originated from the knots.

Worry Beads – History

The worry beads, officially known as “kombologion,” are made from beads crafted from amber, silver, glass, wood, etc. The beads are pierced in the center and strung on a thread, with the ends tied in a knot. The beads are moved slowly one after the other with the help of fingers, or the entire set is rotated around the fingers as a male pastime.

The first known depiction of worry beads in Greece appears in a rare photograph dating around 1840 in Karystos, showing a local nobleman in traditional attire welcoming King Otto, while holding a set of worry beads in his hands.
