The Greek prayer rope resembles the prayer beads and likely evolved from the “komboskini” (prayer rope). It is used for relaxation, devotion, as an anti-stress tool, and even as a means to limit smoking. It is often referred to as “efchantro” (easy knot).

While holding the komboskini, the person touches each knot and says a prayer. The term “komboloï” (prayer rope) derives from the word “knot” (kombos).

The prayer rope, officially known as “kombologion,” consists of beads made from amber, silver, glass, wood, etc., pierced at the center and strung on a thread whose ends are tied in a knot. The beads are moved slowly one by one with the help of the fingers, or the entire rope is rotated around the fingers as a pastime for men.

The first documented mention of the prayer rope in Greece is in a rare photograph from around 1840 in Karystos, which shows a local nobleman in traditional attire greeting King Otto while holding a prayer rope in his hands.

The beads of the prayer rope must always have an odd number for three reasons! The first is related to the visual aspect, design, and balance. The single bead at the bottom creates a perfect semicircle. The second reason is a playful custom with the beads, very popular and common. The beads are allowed to fall two by two, producing rhythmic, melodic sounds. When all the pairs finish, the single bead plays an important role. It prevents the prayer rope from falling and slipping from the hands. The third and final reason is that the odd number always brings good luck and fortune to its owner.
