Konstantinato – What it symbolizes:

The history of this special piece of jewelry began when Saint Helen found the Holy Cross, split it in two, left a portion in Jerusalem, and brought the other part to Constantinople. The splinters from the division mixed with other precious metals, and from the final union, the Konstantinata coins were minted. This also explains its shape as a pendant, reminiscent of a coin from that era.

The Konstantinato got its name from the Emperor, depicting Constantine and Helen on one side, and the cross with the inscription “Jesus Christ Conquers” (ICXC NIKA) on the other.

Today, it is common to offer the Konstantinato at the birth or baptism of a child, or as a pendant for loved ones. Beyond being simple pendants, they are believed to have even miraculous properties. They are often placed alongside icons, and in many parts of Greece, believers bring them to churches every Holy Thursday to be blessed during the liturgy.
