Constantinato – What it symbolizes:

The history of this unique ornament began when Saint Helena found the Holy Cross, cut it in two, leaving one part in Jerusalem and bringing the other to Constantinople. The sawdust from the cutting mixed with other precious metals, and from the final union, Constantinato coins were minted. This also explains its shape as a charm, resembling a coin from that era.

The Constantinato is named after the Emperor, and it depicted on one side Constantine and Helena, and on the other side the cross with “Jesus Christ Conquers” (ICXC NIKA).

Nowadays, it is common to offer the Constantinato at the birth or baptism of a child, as well as to loved ones as a charm. Besides being simple amulets, they are believed to have miraculous properties. They are often placed alongside icons, and in many parts of Greece, the faithful bring them to churches every Holy Thursday for a blessing.
