Artwork from Mount Athos: What It Depicts
On one side of this cross there is a relief representation of the Virgin Mary as the Widest of Heaven, with her arms open to embrace all people as her children, while at the height of her arms the figure of Jesus Christ can be seen. On the reverse side there is the representation of the Crucifixion, with Christ on the cross of martyrdom and next to him the Virgin Mary watching the sacrifice of her only son for the sake of humanity.
