Each part of the Prayer Rope holds symbolic meaning. The most common color is black, symbolizing the mourning of Christians for their sins. The Prayer Rope ends with a cross, reminding those who use it of the crucifixion of Jesus for the salvation of all mankind.

How is the Prayer Rope Used?

The monastic Prayer Rope is an extremely useful aid during prayer and the liturgical services of the Church. With each knot, we invoke the name of the Lord by saying the short prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me.”

Holding the Prayer Rope in our hands and repeating the prayer at each knot, we devote ourselves to prayer. Our mind becomes focused during the services and concentrates on the words of the prayer.
