Prayer Ring 

A “Komboskini” (or “Komboschoini”) is a cord, usually made of wool or silk thread, woven into knots. It is a prayer aid used by monks, clergy, and laypeople of the Orthodox Christian faith.

Each part of the komboskini has symbolic significance. It is primarily made of wool to remind members of the Church that they are the rational sheep of Jesus Christ (John 10:11). Its black color symbolizes the mourning for sins, as “no one is without sin” (cf. 1 Kings 8:46, Job 4:17, Romans 3:9-12, etc.). The komboskini also features a cross to remind us that “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

Reading spiritual books and attending Church services are beneficial and valuable practices. However, for those who do not have this opportunity, the komboskini can sometimes replace other forms of devotion. At each knot, the name of the Lord Jesus is invoked by saying the short prayer, “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me,” or simply, “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.”

The authentic Athonite prayer komboskini features 2 beads. It is made in the traditional manner and blessed by the monks of Mount Athos.
