A rope or Knot rope is a rope made of, usually, black woolen or silk thread woven into knots. It is a prayer aid for monks, clergy and lay people of the Orthodox Christian religion.

In the rosary, each part of it has some symbolic meaning. It is woven mainly of wool to remind the members of the Church that they are the rational sheep of Jesus Christ (John 10:11). It has a black color that symbolizes the mourning of sins since “no one is without sin” (cf. 3 Kings 8:46, Job 4:17, Rom. 3:9-12 etc.). On it the rosary has the cross to bring to mind “that because we were sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8).

Reading spiritual books and attending Church services are good and beneficial. But for those who do not have this possibility, the rosary can sometimes replace the other ways. In each knot you invoke the name of the Lord Jesus by saying the short prayer “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me” or simply “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me”.
