This prayer rope is an authentic monastic handmade item, consisting of 50 knots, with a cross at the end and decorated with one transparent bead. It is crafted by Athonite monks as part of their monastic duties, with great dedication and love. Prayer ropes are the most well-known monastic craft, in accordance with the tradition of Mount Athos. The monks use the proceeds from the sale of prayer ropes and other handmade items to cover their living expenses or to maintain their cells and hermitages.
Prayer Rope: Usage
The prayer rope usually consists of 33 or 100 knots, though it can also be larger, with 200 or 300 knots.
It is an essential prayer aid for monks, clergy, and laypeople. Each time a prayer (usually short) is recited, one knot is counted, helping to keep track of the number of repetitions or the passage of time.
According to Christian tradition, prayer ropes originated with Saint Pachomius in 320 AD. Saint Pachomius sought a way to help monks focus during prayer. One night, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him in a dream and showed him how to create the tool that would assist in prayer. Thus, the prayer rope was created as a gift from God to the people.
