Description

Prayer Rope with 100 knots in black color.

This prayer rope is a genuine monastic handcrafted item, consisting of 100 knots made from silk thread, a tassel, colorful beads, and a double-sided cross. On one side, it depicts the Holy Virgin of Athos, while the other side features the prayer “LORD JESUS CHRIST, HAVE MERCY ON ME.” It is made by Athonite monks as part of their ministry, with great dedication and love. Prayer ropes are considered the most well-known monastic craft, in accordance with the tradition of Mount Athos. The monks use the proceeds from the sale of these prayer ropes and other crafts to support their livelihood or for maintenance work in their cells and monasteries.

Prayer Rope: Usage

The prayer rope usually consists of 33 or 100 knots, but it can also be larger, with 200 or 300 knots.

It is an essential aid for prayer for monks, clergy, and laypeople. Specifically, every time a prayer (usually short) is recited, one knot is counted. This way, the number of repetitions or the passage of time can be monitored.

According to Christian tradition, prayer ropes originated with Saint Pachomius in 320 AD. Specifically, Saint Pachomius began searching for a way to help monks with concentration during prayer. Then, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him in a dream and showed him how to create the tool that would serve the needs of prayer. Thus, the prayer rope was created as a gift from God to humanity.
