Woolen Prayer Rope with 100 Knots and Blue Bead

A “Komboskini” or “Komboschoini” is a rope made of black woolen or silk thread, typically woven into knots. It is a prayer aid used by monks, clergy, and laypeople in the Orthodox Christian faith.

Each section of the prayer rope carries symbolic meaning. It is primarily woven from wool to remind the faithful that they are the rational sheep of Jesus Christ (John 10:11). The black color symbolizes the mourning for sin, as “no one is without sin” (cf. 1 Kings 8:46, Job 4:17, Romans 3:9-12, and others). The prayer rope also features a cross to remind us “that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

Reading spiritual books and attending church services are beneficial and helpful. However, for those who may not have this opportunity, the prayer rope can sometimes replace other methods. On each knot, you invoke the name of the Lord Jesus by saying the short prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me” or simply, “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.”
