The prayer rope is not exclusive to monks. According to the Apostle Paul’s command, “pray without ceasing,” anyone can keep a prayer rope in their pocket or some other discreet place, allowing them to pray unnoticed, without drawing the attention of others, at any time of the day.

In the Garden of the Virgin (Mount Athos), the Orthodox monastic tradition considers prayer an essential daily practice and communication with God. Whether alone or during the Divine Services at the Katholikon (main church) of the Holy Monastery, the monks engage in prayer with fervor and remarkable results.

The crafting of the prayer rope is a service of the monks of Mount Athos, who, through a variety of monastic products they produce, offer the faithful the opportunity to experience the monastic life as a source of nourishment for Orthodox Christians worldwide.
