The Athonite prayer craft, with 100 knots, is woven with synthetic thread and features a Cross at the end, with a tassel.

The prayer rope is not exclusive to the monks. According to the command of the Apostle Paul, “pray without ceasing,” anyone can keep a prayer rope in their pocket or some other discreet place, so that they can pray unnoticed, without drawing the attention of others, at any time during the day.

In the Garden of the Theotokos (Mount Athos), the Orthodox monastic tradition establishes prayer as an essential daily exercise and communication with God.
