Mount Athos Prayer Rope, 50 Knots

The prayer rope is not exclusive to monks. According to the command of the Apostle Paul, “pray without ceasing,” anyone can carry a prayer rope in their pocket or another discreet place, allowing them to pray unnoticed, without attracting attention, at any time of day.

In the Holy Mountain (Mount Athos), Orthodox monastic tradition considers prayer to be an essential daily practice and communication with God. Whether in solitude or during the sacred services in the katholikon of the Holy Monastery, monks engage in prayer with fervor and experience wondrous results.

The making of the prayer rope is a form of service (diakonia) performed by the monks on Mount Athos, who, through a variety of monastic products they produce, offer every faithful the opportunity to experience monastic life as a source of spiritual nourishment for Orthodox Christians everywhere.
