It is an essential aid for prayer for monks, clergy, and laypeople. Specifically, every time a prayer (usually short) is recited, a knot is counted. This helps to track the number of repetitions or the passage of time during prayer.

According to Christian tradition, prayer ropes trace their origins to Saint Pachomius in the year 320 AD. Saint Pachomius sought a way to help monks focus during prayer. One night, Archangel Gabriel appeared to him in a dream and showed him how to create the tool that would serve this purpose. Thus, the prayer rope was created as a gift from God to humanity.
