Typically, a prayer rope consists of 33 or 100 beads, but it can be even longer with 200 or 300 beads.

It is an essential aid for prayer for monks, clergy, and lay people. Specifically, every time a prayer (usually short) is said, one bead is counted. This helps to track the number of repetitions or the passage of time during prayer.

According to Christian tradition, prayer ropes originated with Saint Pachomius in 320 A.D. He sought a way to help the monks focus during prayer. One night, the Archangel Gabriel visited him in a dream and showed him how to create this tool to assist in prayer. Thus, the prayer rope was created as a gift from God to humanity.
