Description

Prayer Rope with 50 Knots in Black with Constantine Coin

This prayer rope is a genuine monastic handiwork, featuring 50 knots, a Constantine coin at its end, and a discreet woven cross in between. It is crafted by monks of Mount Athos as part of their assigned diakonia (spiritual work) with great care and devotion. Prayer handiworks are among the most well-known monastic creations, aligned with the traditions of Mount Athos. Monks use the proceeds from prayer ropes and other handiworks to meet their basic living needs or to support maintenance projects for their cells and sketes.

Prayer Rope: Usage

Prayer ropes typically consist of 33 or 100 knots, but they can also have more, such as 200 or 300 knots.

They are an essential prayer aid for monks, clergy, and laypeople alike. Specifically, each knot is counted with a prayer (usually a short one), allowing the user to track repetitions or measure the passage of time.

According to Christian tradition, prayer ropes trace their origin to Saint Pachomius in 320 A.D. Saint Pachomius sought a method to help monks concentrate during prayer. One night, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him in a dream and showed him how to craft the tool that would aid in prayer. Thus, the prayer rope was created as a gift from God to humanity.
