Tradition states that the plant “Tears of the Virgin Mary” grew under the cross of Christ from the tears of the Virgin Mary, which fell to the earth as she mourned the suffering and death of her Only Son. According to this version, a monk, who was sorrowful because he could not learn to make a prayer rope, was approached by the Virgin Mary, who asked why he was upset. He replied, “I cannot learn to make a prayer rope.” Then the Virgin Mary gave him the seeds of this plant and said, “Take my tears, cultivate them, and make prayer ropes. And say: ‘Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. O Most Holy Theotokos, save us.'”
