Virgin Mary Life-Giving Spring
The Mother of Christ, as Life-Giving Spring, is an epithet of the Theotokos. It started being used when Byzantine Emperor Leo I (457-474) built the historic Church of the Life-Giving Spring in Balukli, Istanbul, at the site where, by the Virgin Mary’s guidance, a sacred spring was discovered. Over the centuries, numerous miraculous healings took place there through her intercession, making it one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in Greek Orthodoxy.
The Feast of the Life-Giving Spring is celebrated on the Friday of Pascha.
