Description

Wooden Hanging Amulet with the Virgin Mary of Sumela

A beautiful wood-carved amulet from Mount Athos featuring a relief depiction of the Virgin Mary of Sumela.

This is an aesthetically pleasing and practical handcrafted item made from limewood or cherry wood, created by monks with great skill in wood carving. With its relatively small size and well-thought-out construction (thanks to the cord at the top), it can be placed anywhere in the home, in the car, or even inside a bag, allowing the faithful to always feel close to the Grace and protection of the Virgin Mary.

It can also serve as a beautiful gift for loved ones.

On the back, the exact name of the representation is inscribed.

Virgin Mary of Sumela

Two words that symbolize the entire Christian history of Pontic Hellenism.

According to tradition, the icon of the Virgin Mary of Sumela was created by the Apostle and Evangelist Luke. In 386, monks Barnabas and Sophronius, after a vision, found themselves in a cave in the Pontic mountains where they discovered the icon of the Virgin Mary, laying the foundations for the establishment of the Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Sumela, which was destroyed by the Turks during the uprooting of the Pontians. The monastery and the icon took their name from Mount Melas and the Pontic word “su”, meaning “to” or “at”: thus, “to Melas”.
