Saint John the Forerunner and Baptist (January 7)
John was the son of the priest Zacharias and Elizabeth. Until the age of thirty, he lived an ascetic life in the Judean desert, wholly dedicated to prayer and spiritual perfection. He wore a garment made of camel hair, a leather belt around his waist, and his food consisted of locusts and wild honey. His teachings are summarized in the phrase: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” thus preparing the way for our Lord Jesus Christ and His salvific mission.

Christ Himself said of John, “Among those born of women, there has not risen anyone greater.”
