Seal for Prosforo of Mount Athos – Symbolism

The Prosforo is the bread we offer in the Church to perform the Divine Eucharist. Together with wine, as the Holy Gifts (bread and wine), before being transferred during the Great Entrance to the Holy Altar, they are placed on the Prothesis (from the Greek word προ + τίθημι = “to place”), where, through the Proskomidi (Preparation), they are prepared for the Divine Liturgy.

The round design of the Prosforo symbolizes the womb of the Virgin Mary, from which her only-begotten Son was born. On the Prosforo, there is a raised design formed by the seal.

From the center of the Prosforo comes the Lamb, i.e., the central square of the design with the letters: ΙΣ ΧΣ ΝΙ ΚΑ (Jesus Christ Conquers). These letters should be clearly visible and legible. It is called the Lamb (Arnaki), because the prophet Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah, like an innocent lamb, would be led to the sacrifice.

The design of the Prosforo also contains the portion for the Virgin Mary, with the letters Μ and Θ, meaning Mother of God. The triangular portion for the Virgin Mary is placed to the right of the Lamb.

From the 9 small triangles on the right side of the Prosforo, portions for the angels and all the saints are taken and placed to the left of the Lamb. From other parts of the Prosforo, portions are taken for the living and the deceased who belong to the Orthodox Church.
