Prosforo Seal of Mount Athos – Symbolism

The Prosforo is the bread we offer at the Church for the Divine Eucharist. Along with the wine, as the Precious Gifts (bread and wine), they are placed at the Prothesis (pro + tithemi = place before) before being transferred during the Great Entrance to the Holy Altar, where, through the service of the Proskomide, they are prepared for the Divine Liturgy.

The round shape of the Prosforo symbolizes the womb of the Virgin Mary, from where her only-begotten Son was born. On the Prosforo, there is a raised design formed by the seal.

At the center of the Prosforo is the Lamb (Amnos), which is the central square of the design with the letters: IC XC NI KA (Jesus Christ conquers). These letters must be clearly visible and distinct. It is called the Lamb because the prophet Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah, like a harmless lamb, would be led to the sacrifice.

The design of the Prosforo also includes the portion of the Virgin Mary, marked with the letters M and Th, i.e., Mother of God. The triangular portion of the Virgin is placed to the right of the Lamb.

From the 9 small triangles on the right part of the Prosforo, portions are taken for the angels and all saints, and are placed to the left of the Lamb. From other parts of the Prosforo, portions are taken for the living and the departed who belong to the Orthodox Church.

Prosforo Seal of Mount Athos – Care Tips
