Prosforo Seal of Mount Athos – Symbolism

The Prosforo is the bread offered at the church for the Divine Eucharist. Along with wine, as Holy Gifts (bread and wine), before being transferred with the Great Entrance to the Holy Altar, they are placed on the Prothesis (from the Greek προ + τίθημι = to place), where, during the Proskomide service, they are prepared for the Divine Liturgy.

The round shape of the Prosforo symbolizes the womb of the Virgin Mary, from which her only Son was born. On the Prosforo, there is a raised design formed by the seal.

At the center of the Prosforo is the Lamb (Agnus Dei), which is the central square part of the design with the letters: ΙΣ ΧΣ ΝΙ ΚΑ (Jesus Christ conquers). These letters must be clearly visible. It is called the Lamb because the prophet Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would be led to sacrifice like a harmless lamb.

The Prosforo design also includes the portion of the Theotokos, represented by the letters Μ and Θ, meaning Mother of God. The triangular portion of the Theotokos is placed to the right of the Lamb.

From the 9 small triangles on the right side of the Prosforo, portions for the angels and all the saints are taken and placed to the left of the Lamb. Other parts of the Prosforo are used for the living and the deceased, who belong to the Orthodox Church.
