Description

Handmade Seal for Prosphora – Lamb

This handmade seal is crafted by Father Damaskinos at the Holy Cell of Saint Basil in Kavsokalyvia. It is meticulously hand-carved on a piece of high-quality poplar wood, featuring deep engraving, a thick perimeter, and symbolism that faithfully follows authentic Orthodox iconography. The poplar wood is of excellent quality and safe for food contact. On the back, it has a handle for easy use, decorated with a carved cross and Byzantine inscription “ΙΗΣΟΥΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΝΙΚΑ” (Jesus Christ Conquers), and the carved text “ΑΓΙΟΝ ΟΡΟΣ” (Holy Mount Athos).

Symbolism of the Seal for Prosphora of Mount Athos
The Prosphora is the bread offered in the Church for the Divine Eucharist. Along with the wine, it is placed on the Prothesis Table (before the altar), where it is prepared for the Divine Liturgy during the Proskomide (the preparation of the gifts).

The circular design of the Prosphora symbolizes the womb of the Virgin Mary, from which her only Son, Jesus Christ, was born. The seal leaves an embossed image on the bread.

From the center of the Prosphora, the Lamb (Αμνός) is formed – the central square with the letters: ΙΣ ΧΣ ΝΙ ΚΑ (Jesus Christ conquers). These letters should be clearly visible and distinct. The term Lamb is used because the prophet Isaiah foretold that the Messiah would be led to His sacrifice like a harmless lamb.

The design also contains the portion for the Virgin Mary, marked with the letters Μ and Θ, meaning Mother of God. This triangular portion is placed to the right of the Lamb.

From the 9 triangles on the right side of the Prosphora, portions for the angels and all saints are taken and placed to the left of the Lamb. Other portions are taken for the living and the departed faithful of the Orthodox Church.

Care Tips for the Seal
The seals for Prosphora should be stored in a protective case and kept away from moisture. Do not wet or oil the seal. To clean any residual dough from the seal, use a toothpick and a small brush.
