What Does Myrrh Symbolize?

Myrrh is also known as “oil of thanksgiving,” “chrism of thanksgiving,” or “heavenly chrism.” Its symbolism in Orthodox tradition is numerous and particularly important as Myrrh symbolizes the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Furthermore, Myrrh symbolizes the fragrance of faith, the tenderness of the heart, and devotion to the Lord. As mentioned in the Gospel, a few days before the Crucifixion of Jesus, when He was in Bethany, at the house of Simon the Leper, a woman approached Him, holding an alabaster jar of precious myrrh, with which she anointed His head (Matt. 26:6-7).

The Myrrhbearers took their name from the myrrh. These women who followed the Lord, along with the Virgin Mary, stayed with her during the Passion of Jesus and made sure to anoint His body with myrrh, thus offering honors to their Teacher.
