Wooden Seal for Koliva

The wooden seal for koliva features the design of the Cross and the phrase “IC XC NIKA,” meaning “Jesus Christ Conquers.” This seal is an essential tool for decorating koliva, and it comes with two handles for easy placement on the wheat. Koliva is one of the oldest Christian traditions, prepared on the Saturdays of Souls and whenever we wish to perform a memorial service in the church for the repose of our departed loved ones.

What Koliva Symbolize

According to the Church, koliva symbolize the common resurrection of mankind. Each ingredient used in the koliva has its own symbolism. Specifically, the wheat represents the souls, the blanched almonds represent the bare bones, and the dried fruits represent life being renewed. The ground toasted bread and flour symbolize light soil. The pomegranate symbolizes the brightness of Paradise, the spices represent the fragrances of this world, the raisins symbolize the sweetness of life and Christ, who is the vine, while the sugar represents the sweetness of Paradise.
