Wooden Seal for Koliva

This wooden seal for koliva features an intricate Cross design at its center, along with the phrase IC XC NIKA, meaning “Jesus Christ Conquers.” The seal is an essential tool for decorating koliva, and it comes with two handles for easy placement on the wheat. Koliva is one of the oldest Christian traditions, prepared on Souls’ Saturdays and whenever we perform a memorial service in church for the repose of our departed loved ones.

What Do Koliva Symbolize?

According to the Church, koliva symbolize the common resurrection of the dead. Each ingredient used in the koliva has its own symbolic meaning. Specifically, the wheat represents the souls, the blanched almonds represent the bare bones, and the dried fruits represent the life that is renewed. The crushed breadcrumbs and flour symbolize light earth. For Christians, the pomegranate represents the glory of Paradise, the spices are the fragrances of this world, the raisins symbolize the sweetness of life and Christ, who is the vine, while the sugar represents the sweet Paradise.
