Description
Lithograph of Theotokos of Sorrows
A lithograph depicting the Theotokos of Sorrows. Her facial expression reveals her grief, sorrow, and anguish—all the emotions she endured during the suffering and Crucifixion of her only Son. She carries the pain of a fate that was predestined for the salvation of humanity, a fate she could do nothing but witness.
The Virgin Mary’s face is marked by the unspeakable sorrow of a mother who has lost her only child—more so, of a mother who watched her innocent Son be tormented. This is why the Theotokos remains one of the most beloved figures in Orthodoxy, not only for her holy life but because she was a Mother. A mother to her only Son and a mother to all who seek comfort in her embrace.
Lithograph – Features
The art of lithography is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is widely used by monks to create outstanding works of religious art. In this particular piece, the iconographer-monk used a lithographed replica of Byzantine art and crafted this work following the traditional method of handmade aging. This technique results in a magnificent artwork with unique aesthetic value. The wood has been treated with special materials to ensure the longevity of the colors over time.
