Description

Lithograph of Theotokos Glykophilousa
The Theotokos Glykophilousa is always depicted in bust form, with her face pressed closely against her Child, who nestles fearfully in her embrace. She wears a mourning robe, while Christ is dressed in a gray-green tunic with a light-colored mantle. His gaze is turned toward the Theotokos.

The Theotokos Glykophilousa holds her only-begotten Son tenderly in her arms. Her posture highlights her human nature—she tilts her head, touching her face gently to that of her beloved Son. Their tight embrace is an outward expression of the sorrow and mourning she experienced during Christ’s Crucifixion.

At the same time, this icon conveys the Theotokos’ profound love for her Son from a deeply human perspective. Jesus places His little hand on His Mother’s face, just as any child would, seeking warmth and security in the embrace of its mother.

Theotokos Glykophilousa: The Meaning Behind the Name
This title of the Theotokos comes from this particular iconographic style, in which she is depicted pressing her head affectionately against the cheek of the young Christ. Mother and Son embrace tenderly, symbolizing their deep love and connection.

Lithograph – Features
The art of lithography is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is widely used by monks to create outstanding works of religious art. In this particular piece, the iconographer-monk used a lithographed replica of Byzantine art and crafted this work following the traditional method of handmade aging. This technique results in a magnificent artwork with unique aesthetic value. The wood has been treated with special materials to ensure the longevity of the colors over time.
