Description

Lithograph of Saint George
Saint George the Great Martyr and Trophy-Bearer was born in Cappadocia in 275 AD to Christian parents. After his father was martyred for Christ, his mother took the ten-year-old George and settled in her hometown in Palestine. At the age of 18, George joined the Roman army, quickly rising through the ranks and earning the title of count.

Emperor Diocletian, in his attempt to eradicate Christians, gathered all his officials to lead the campaign against them. Among them, George boldly confessed his Christian faith before the emperor.

Diocletian, enraged, imprisoned George and subjected him to a series of tortures. The executioners tied him to a large wheel lined with sharp blades meant to tear his body apart. At that moment, a voice from heaven reassured him, saying, “Do not be afraid, George, for I am with you,” and an angel appeared, freeing him and healing his wounds.

Next, he was thrown into a pit filled with quicklime and water, intended to dissolve his bones. However, George emerged unharmed. The emperor then ordered him to wear red-hot iron shoes with nails and walk, but George continued unharmed, praying throughout.

He was then severely whipped, his entire body wounded, yet he continued to shine with a divine light. After being imprisoned again, George had a vision of Christ telling him he would soon receive the crown of martyrdom. The next morning, he was taken before Diocletian once more. When he refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods, the emperor ordered his execution by beheading.

His faithful servant, Pasikratis, carrying out George’s final wishes, took the relics of the great martyr and, along with those of his mother, Saint Polychronia, transported them to Lydda in Palestine. Later, the Crusaders carried them to the West. The Church commemorates Saint George on April 23rd.
