Description

Lithograph of Saint Porphyrios the Kapsokalyvite
A stunning depiction of Saint Porphyrios the Kapsokalyvite, who was canonized as a saint of the Orthodox Church in 2013.

Elder Porphyrios was born in 1906 in Evia, Greece, and at the age of 12, he secretly left for Mount Athos. He became a monk at the age of 14, taking the name Nikitas. However, after a few years, he became seriously ill and was forced to leave Mount Athos.

He returned to Evia and resided at the Monastery of Saint Charalambos in Lefka, where in 1926, he was ordained a priest by Porphyrios III, Archbishop of Sinai, who gave him the name Porphyrios. At just 22 years old, he became a spiritual father and confessor, and soon after, he was elevated to archimandrite.

In 1940, on the eve of World War II, he was appointed as the chaplain and spiritual father at the Polyclinic of Athens, where he remained for many years.

Sensing his approaching end, in June 1991, he departed for his cell of Saint George in Kapsokalyvia, Mount Athos, where he peacefully passed away on December 2, 1991.

Lithograph – Features
The art of lithography is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is widely used by monks to create outstanding works of religious art. In this particular piece, the iconographer-monk used a lithographed replica of Byzantine art and crafted this work following the traditional method of handmade aging. This technique results in a magnificent artwork with unique aesthetic value. The wood has been treated with special materials to ensure the longevity of the colors over time.
