Theotokos of the Seven Swords: The History of the Icon
In this unique icon, the Virgin Mary is depicted with her heart pierced by seven swords. In the most common iconographic representation, four swords appear on her left side and three on her right.

Because Catholics have adopted the veneration of the “Immaculate Heart of Mary,” many assume that the icon of Theotokos of the Seven Swords originates from Catholic tradition. However, this icon is actually linked to the prophecy of Saint Simeon the God-Receiver, recorded by the Evangelist Luke: “And a sword will pierce your own soul too…” (Luke 2:35).

This passage refers to the deep sorrow the Virgin Mary would experience at the moment of separation from her beloved Son, witnessing His crucifixion and suffering.

The Theotokos of the Seven Swords is also known as “The Prophecy of Righteous Simeon” and is commemorated by the Church on August 13th.

Lithograph – Features
The art of lithography is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is widely used by monks to create outstanding works of religious art. In this particular piece, the iconographer-monk used a lithographed replica of Byzantine art and crafted this work following the traditional method of handmade aging. This technique results in a magnificent artwork with unique aesthetic value. The wood has been treated with special materials to ensure the longevity of the colors over time.
