Sanctification is called the special, extraordinary service of the Orthodox Church that recalls the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan River, and during which the priest sanctifies the water with prayers, invocation of the Holy Spirit and triple immersion of the Holy Cross in water.

The Small Blessing is performed on the first day of each month and has its own Service.

The Great Sanctification takes place on the 5th and 6th of January when the waters are sanctified.

Members of the Orthodox Church consider sanctification to be protective and for this reason they drink holy water and then store bottles of it, either this Epiphany or the monthly sanctification.
