Aged Iconostasis with the Crucifixion

In this unique iconostasis, the monk chose the theme of the Crucifixion of Jesus. A beautiful iconostasis, designed to resemble a triptych focused on the Crucifixion. Each part of it depicts a different figure: Jesus Christ on the Cross of His martyrdom, the Virgin Mary, and Saint John the Evangelist.

The Son of God is on the Cross of His martyrdom, while beside Him, filled with anxiety and profound sorrow, stands the Virgin Mary, watching her only Son suffer. On the left side of the Cross stands Saint John the Evangelist, the beloved disciple of Jesus, watching the suffering of the God-man with deep sorrow.

The Crucifixion of Christ is the highest act of love from God to humanity. Jesus sacrifices Himself and takes upon Himself all the sins of mankind, offering atonement and salvation. The Crucifixion is one of the most well-known iconographic themes, rich with powerful symbolism. After all, on an individual level, every prayer begins and ends with the cross.

This particular iconostasis is made from pieces of wood originating from a renovated cell of Mount Athos. These woods have been preserved using the same techniques employed by monks for the wooden iconostasis of the churches, and then transformed into a beautiful iconostasis. Each of these iconostases is unique, as are the pieces of wood from which it is made, as they have been reused.
