Description

Iconostasis Lithograph with the Virgin of the Gorgoepikoos

One of the many titles given to the Virgin Mary is the “Virgin of the Gorgoepikoos.” As is well known, the miraculous icon of the Virgin Gorgoepikoos has been kept at the Monastery of Dochiariou on Mount Athos since 1646. It received this specific name after a miracle. According to tradition, one of the monks was passing in front of the icon of the Virgin, holding lit torches, causing the icon to darken. A voice then asked him to stop.

The monk did not pay attention and continued, only to lose his light shortly after. He then realized that the voice he had heard was that of the Virgin and begged her for mercy. The Virgin, as a compassionate mother, heard his prayer and granted him light, saying, “I am the Lady of this Monastery and I quickly respond to those who call upon me, granting them their requests for salvation.”

Lithograph: Features

Using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk iconographer created this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught to him on Mount Athos. The artificial aging of the icon is done by hand, which gives the work, depicting the Virgin of the Gorgoepikoos, a collectible value. The lithographic technique in iconography is a printing technique that was invented in 1798.

The iconostasis is available upon request.
