Aged Iconostasis with the Immaculate Virgin Mary

A beautiful iconostasis featuring the representation of the Virgin Mary, known by the title “Immaculate.” The name of the icon originates from the hymn of the *Apodipno* (Midnight Office) “Spotless, Immaculate, Undefiled…” composed by the monk Paul.

In Orthodox iconography, the Immaculate Virgin Mary is also called the Virgin of the Passion, because Christ gazes at the Angels, who are depicted on either side of the Virgin and hold the symbols of the Passion, namely the Cross, the Spear, and the Sponge. The Virgin Mary is shown holding Jesus Christ in her arms, with her hand protectively beneath His body. On Christ’s face, one can discern His terrified gaze, which is explained by the fact that what He is seeing before Him are the Passion and the Crucifixion Sacrifice.

An elegant iconostasis for any home, made by Athonite monks using pieces of wood from restored cells of Mount Athos.
