Aged Iconostasis with Panagia Immaculate

A wonderful iconostasis with the representation of the Virgin Mary, who bears the nickname Immaculate. It is characteristic that the name of the icon comes from the hymn of Compline “Unsullied, Undefiled, Ahrade…” composed by the monk Paul.

In Orthodox iconography, Panagia Immaculate is also called Our Lady of the Passion, because Christ gazes at the Angels, who are depicted on either side of the Virgin Mary and hold in their hands the symbols of the passion, namely the Cross, the Lance and the Sponge. The Virgin Mary is seen holding Jesus Christ in her arms, with her hand protectively under his body. In the face of Christ one can discern his frightened gaze, which is explained by the fact that what he sees before him are his Passion and Sacrifice on the Cross.
